WAGERING REQUIREMENTS CALCULATOR

The formula, worked examples, and a clear framework for deciding whether any casino bonus is worth your time.

By Gil Garcia How we research

Wagering requirements determine how many times you must bet the bonus (and sometimes the deposit) before withdrawing winnings. Formula: Total bets required = Bonus amount × Wagering multiplier. A 100 bonus at 35x requires 3,500 in bets. The expected cost of clearing the wagering is: Total bets × (1 − RTP). At 96% RTP over 3,500 in bets, you expect to lose 140 in the process of clearing a 100 bonus — making the bonus negative EV overall.

The Core Formula

Step 1: Calculate total bets required.

Total bets = Bonus amount × Wagering multiplier

Example: 100 bonus, 35x wagering = 100 × 35 = 3,500 in bets required.

Step 2: Calculate expected losses during wagering.

Expected loss = Total bets × (1 − RTP)

At 96% RTP (average slots): 3,500 × 0.04 = 140 expected loss during wagering.

Step 3: Calculate net bonus value.

Net value = Bonus amount − Expected loss = 100 − 140 = −40

This bonus costs you an expected 40 to claim. It is negative EV.

Break-Even Wagering Requirement

A bonus breaks even when the expected clearing cost equals the bonus amount. Rearranging:

Break-even multiplier = 1 / (1 − RTP)

At 96% RTP: 1 / 0.04 = 25x wagering

At 97% RTP: 1 / 0.03 = 33x wagering

At 98% RTP (live blackjack, if allowed): 1 / 0.02 = 50x wagering

For most slots (96% RTP), any bonus above 25x wagering is negative expected value. The common 35x–40x industry standard is therefore a money-loser for the player in EV terms.

Bonus + Deposit Wagering

Many bonuses require wagering both the bonus and the initial deposit before withdrawal. This dramatically increases the total bet requirement.

Example: 100 deposit, 100% match (100 bonus), 40x wagering on bonus + deposit.

Total bets = (100 + 100) × 40 = 8,000

Expected loss at 96% RTP = 8,000 × 0.04 = 320

Net value = 100 bonus − 320 expected cost = −220

This is an extremely negative-EV bonus. It is common at offshore casinos. Always check whether wagering applies to bonus-only or bonus-plus-deposit.

Time Limits and Win Caps

Two additional terms significantly affect bonus value that are not captured in the basic EV calculation:

  • Time limit — most bonuses expire 7–30 days after crediting. If you cannot complete wagering in time, the bonus and derived winnings are forfeited. Shorter time limits force faster betting, increasing variance and the chance of busting the bonus balance before wagering completes.
  • Maximum withdrawal from bonus — some bonuses cap total cashable winnings at 3x–10x the bonus amount regardless of how much you win during wagering. A 100 bonus with a 5x max withdrawal cap limits winnings to 500 no matter the balance reached. This truncates the right tail of variance — the one scenario where a high-wagering bonus could theoretically be profitable.

When Is a Casino Bonus Worth Claiming?

Claim a bonus if: wagering requirement is 25x or lower on a 96%+ RTP game, the game you want to play is eligible, and there is no max withdrawal cap that limits your upside.

Skip a bonus if: wagering is 40x+, games you prefer are excluded or weighted at under 50%, the bonus requires deposit-plus-bonus wagering, or you are not planning to bet the required amount regardless.

No-wagering bonuses are always worth claiming — they have zero expected cost. The headline amounts are smaller but the EV is positive by definition.

FAQ

How do I calculate wagering requirements?
Multiply the bonus amount by the wagering multiplier. A 50 bonus at 40x wagering = 2,000 in total bets required. If the wagering applies to bonus + deposit and you deposited 50, the total is (50 + 50) × 40 = 4,000.
What is the minimum RTP needed to beat wagering requirements?
At 35x wagering, you need an RTP above 97.1% to break even on the bonus in expected value terms. No slot consistently achieves this. At 20x wagering, you need RTP above 95%, which many modern slots meet. This is why bonuses below 20x are considered genuinely valuable for slot players.
Do all games count towards wagering at the same rate?
No. Slots typically count 100%, but table games count 10%–50% or are excluded entirely. If you clear wagering using live blackjack (0% contribution at many casinos), you make no progress despite placing real bets. Always check the game contribution table in bonus terms before playing.
What happens if my bonus balance reaches zero before wagering completes?
If the bonus balance reaches zero, wagering requirements are usually cancelled — you cannot keep betting with real money and still have the bonus credited. Some casinos run a unified balance model where real money and bonus funds are merged; in this case, depleting the balance to zero ends the bonus entirely.
Are free spins subject to wagering requirements?
Yes, almost always. Free spin winnings are credited as bonus cash subject to the casino's standard wagering requirement (typically 30x–50x the winnings). If 20 free spins at 10p each generate 3 in winnings, you need to wager 90–150 before withdrawing that 3. The maximum win from free spins is also often capped.
What does 1x wagering mean?
1x wagering means you must bet the bonus amount once before withdrawing. A 50 bonus at 1x requires just 50 in bets — functionally equivalent to a no-wagering bonus in most cases. Casinos offering 1x wagering are significantly more player-friendly than those offering 30x–50x standard.
